Creatures of The Night

Creatures of The Night

A Story by Kathryn Smith

It was Halloween afternoon.

I was sitting in my bedroom reading a book, when 4 year old Corbin walked in my room asking if we could play.

After some giggles and childish laughter and banter, his eyes suddenly lit up and he climbed up on to my bed.

On my window sill I had Halloween decorations sitting on it.

2 on each ledge - along with spider rings and a cat stamp.

Corbin proceeded to play with them in delight.

One by one, I watched him as he took all my decorations off of my window and placed them on my bed.

Next, he began to rearrange them so they could "look out the window."

With some help from me, we placed all four of my decorations on the top ledge so that they indeed were looking out the window.

"Corbin- now when you come trick or treating, you can look up at my window and see your Halloween friends!"

Corbin beamed and was very proud of the little crowd we made.

Two child witches, a boy vampire, and a ghost are currently still looking out my window at the night sky.

Halloween always seems to arrive in a swirling roaring wind - we blink and the calm of November creeps in.

Perhaps it is my child like wonder - but each year all the Halloween decorations; all the ghosts and jack o lanterns, the witches and vampires, the monsters and Frankenstein's - they all seem to be alive.

They all seem to be watching.

Charlie - a ghost my father and I made out of an old sheet, a stick and pine needles is our much loved decoration. He's like family.

We hang him up each year - and have a running joke he is alive.

When you call Charlie's name, or say hello - the wind always blows Charlie so his face is turned to you.

If each decoration were alive, what do they see?

A beginning or an end?

Do they enjoy finally being seen after being coated in dust and shut in cramped closets and attics?

Do they smile in delight looking at the children dressed up, laughing in fright on Halloween night?

Do they dread the leaves falling off the trees in October? Knowing winter is upon us?

Do the decorations of spirit hold magic?

It's up to you to find out.

So when you take your ghosts down - your witches, your warlocks.

Look in their eyes.

Look in their eyes and wonder if they are creatures of the night.

Later that night, I ran up to my bedroom to grab my camera - and to my excitement I noticed a little green dinosaur running up my driveway.

It was Corbin.

I watched him stop - and with a grin he looked up at my window - and gave a big wave, a second later he ran to my door.

Trick or Treat Krafryn!!

Don’t worry too much about grammar and all that. This is not English 101. What’s important is the story. That’s what you have here; a story. You can clean it up later. Telling stories is what we are supposed to be doing here. Many people on this site don’t seem to be aware of that. Here you have a beginning, middle, and end. That’s a story. Good job.

Keep writing. You have a talent.

hahah thanks a million!! :) xx I loved your review. very kind.
The story written here is undoubtedly heart-warming. The way you wrote it could use some work. Grammar issues, wordy sentences and lack of detail can hurt a story. Choppy sentence structure is not helpful either. The line "It's up to you to find out" sounds awkward.

Hate me yet?

Seriously, though, I'll say again, this is a heart-warming story that brings out the kid in us. It does for me. With some revision, I feel this could be a little bit better.
