My Child

My Child

A Story by Kathryn Smith

To my son or daughter,

The thought of you is a strange thought.

The thought of having a child of my very own.

I'm beginning to think you may never exist.

For love is something I can't seem to find.

If you ever come to be - I will be over the moon!

It will mean someone may truly have loved me.

To be honest, I don't even know if I really want any children.

You see my future baby, I work with children on a daily basis - and there are days the thought of becoming a crazy cat lady who stays home and drinks wine is getting more and more appealing.

My child of mine, what would you be like?

Would you have my big brown eyes?

My energy?

 My smile?

I hope you have my heart. But let me warn you now, be very careful with it.

I often wonder about you. What I'd name you.

Who you 're going to dress up as on Halloween.

What you're going to want for Christmas.

What sports you might want to be play.

If you'll be full of music and have a love for the arts.

My child, I will let you be whomever you dare to be.

and I will let you love who you want to love.

My baby - the thought of you could make my heart burst.

If I see you in the future please remind me.

Remind me that love really does exist.

and that I am loved by you.

My child, your future mother is broken.

She is 24 and is trying to do the best she can with her life - but it's all quite frightening and sad.

She's been let down more than she can bear.

And she's holding on to the very thought of you.

She's hoping her future is bright.

The thought of what it could be like gives her heart fresh breathable air.

My child I hope you know, I'll always love you.

Even when you fly off and go.

Even when your words are cold like snow.

And even when we don't agree.

My child, if you ever come to be - please know, this letter was written for you. And the girl who wrote it will be excited to show you.

Love,

Your future mother
