Farewell

Farewell

A Poem by Kathryn Smith

It is scratching

Screeching

Soaring

Fighting

Beating

Dreaming

Molding

Growing

Hatching

Your wild heart

Is breaking

Breaking free

Alone at the table

Soup and cheese bread

A full glass of water

It drowns your head

Your family left you

For that television again

You'd rather have company

Conversation

Their voices

Their laughter

Their questions

Their light coloured eyes

Especially when you're about to leave them behind

Headlines

News

Election scores

Big cities

Too much food

Vanity

Oodles of people

The USA

Did you ever think

As a little girl

You'd be scared?

You'd be torn?

Out of place

 In a big strange world?

Yet you'd feel you belonged

Far across the ocean

In somebody else's arms

In the days you came

They planned your funeral

But could you tell?

That at 23

You would say farewell?

Farewell to your country

Farewell to your friends

Farewell to the forest

Farewell

A mad girl

A mad girl they say

A mad girl's love song

Is all that you are these days

Follow your heart?

Lose your mind

The best love is insane

The walls of protection

You will gladly put in flames

War paint on your face

A storm through your mane

You won't be the same

That is that

Farewell

This is not the end

For you have a heart to tend

A luminous heart to mend

very sad but I get what you're saying. my family was never really close, not towards me anyways. at this point though I'd rather have a significant other than an uncle who loves me or whatever, know what I mean?

beautiful, when you start to realize that something's wrong..how we are confined by the walls we have built..
& how when we take notice of it..it comes to us in the form of an awakening..
Good job!

A painting of reality, almost surreal... well done!

Death is a thing we can't resist not to investigate with ourselves. It is surely a mysterious thing that pulls our curiousity. I liked the way you wrote of how she said farewell to everything she knows and to all the things she grew up around. Saying goodbye is never easy, especially at a young age. Many people don't even have a chance to say that one last 'goodbye.'
"But coud you tell that at the age of 23 you would say farewell?" This was a very strong line and obviously a rhetorical question - because from what I understood then of course she didn't know beforehand.
Thanks for sharing - had a great read :)

I agree and I loved your words my friend.
"A mad girl
A mad girl they say
A mad girl's love song
Is all that you are these days
Follow your heart?
Lose your mind
The best love is insane
The walls of protection
You will gladly put in flames
War paint on your face
A storm through your mane
You won't be the same"
Good to know madness. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

I guess the graphic says it all, leaving on a metallic bird with many sets of eyes, directed backward and forward and not knowing which is more real? A heart needs fed by the love up ahead, but what's left behind is never really out of mind...a different kind. Blue skies and following winds, the land ahead's where that love begins...Farewell.

A sense of discomfort with what goes about our days trying to pass us as normal
but could be so wrong
and the soul screams out

when does all that end .... your words speak outside of you
which is pretty cool that you care about others this much

Thanks for sharing

I absolutely loved this poem Kathryn :D As someone who is primarily a poet, this was a really great piece of work to see from you. Great job with this one :) I can't wait to see what you have next.
