Power of Women

Power of Women

A Story by Kathryn Smith

Do What You Wanna

"You have it all ahead of you."

I got a Christmas card from a dear friend of mine, and her words stuck to me.

She's right.

She's simply right.

Sometimes I get myself bent out of shape about the future and forget to just breathe and live in the moment.

My mother frowned at the recent cover of my father's Sports Illustrated magazine.

Serena Williams was on the cover scantily clad and sitting on a throne.

My mother was upset because of the way Sports Illustrated chose to display Serena.

When the American Women's soccer team took home the trophy for the Women's World Cup, they appeared on the cover twice.

Our girls weren't in bikinis, but in their soccer uniforms.

So why was Serena not in her tennis uniform?

My brother brought up a good point.

Media is obsessed with feminism.

There are two sides of feminism.

One side is embracing equal rights.

The other side is embracing the simple beauty of a woman and the power she has with her appeal.

I've heard about side one more than side two.

I thought about the side I hadn't heard much about.

The power of appeal.

I know that power well.

Not everyone feels the same as I do, but more than anything, I absolutely love the feeling you get when you put on a good pair of high heels.

Adding a smile, a dress, doing your hair, lipstick, and then walking down the street, often makes me feel extremely powerful.

I could run the whole damn world.

People seem to frown upon displaying a woman's sex appeal, but I think it's an art.

It's glorious.

Sure some things are distasteful, it all depends on the image.

It's important to keep class.

Natural beauty is the best.

It can't be beat.

Underneath that lipstick we women are strong.

We have the power to bring a man to his knees.

We have the power to carry a child, give birth, and go right back to business.

Women have the power to change the world and to keep the world going.

We have the power to be whatever we want to be.

With this magazine cover, I understood both sides of the argument, but looking at Serena's beauty made me proud to be woman.

No matter what we wear, and no matter what we do, we'll always be beautiful.

Women are women.

I think in the end as humans in general we should try not to get our heads wrapped up into too much seriousness.

Just have a good, fun, time.

Dance in the rain.

Go wild.

Have fun.

Enjoy life.

Do what we want, whether it's running a marathon or eating a container of ice cream.

Knowing that I've got miles to go, is exhilarating.

All the more reason to put on that dress and heels and give the universe a smile.

Time to enjoy the power of being a female.

I've got a world to run and a few winks to give.

I do believe that women DO run the world, no matter what they are wearing (at least in our cultural norms) but I honestly never thought that sexy clothing enhanced the show, brightening the power grid. (Maybe 'cause my wife is taller and has never worn heels in the 23 years we've been together.) The power women exhibit during childbirth extends into their lives; even if they appear to be doing nothing spectacular there are always undercurrents of power, running the children's lives, running YOURS. This power is no longer limited in the workplace (although there is that glass ceiling that needs to be shattered), so women put on your highest heels and smash through that damn ceiling!! A wonderful write, Kathryn. take care...dan

Congratulations. You've successfully written a sequel to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"; it's called "Women Just Wanna Have Fun". Your opinions on the portrayal of women and your take on feminism are both very relatable and very true. They all hit home. Thank you for posting this. Good job!

I agree dear Kathryn. I taught my daughter to be strong.
"Just have a good, fun, time.
Dance in the rain.
Go wild.
Have fun.
Enjoy life. "
I believe in the ancient ways. Woman control the house and the family. They are the foundation of a family. I told my daughter. Get a education. Never depend on the income of a man. You made meaningful and powerful point in the poem. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on a important topic.

I love your admiration here of being beautiful and discarding any form of criticism of women beautifying themselves
a woman is innately beautiful for in her suffering she bears so much wisdom
and that wisdom truly does translate into a certain lifestyle of endless cycles that she survives with class and finesse
so even through her craziest moments of being totally not herself she remembers to pull it together
