Wild Girl

Wild Girl

A Story by Kathryn Smith

Starless sky

I don't know where it is you've been hiding

but I need you tonight

Once upon a time there was a wild girl.

She ran through her forest everyday.

but one day something was missing.

Everywhere she looked romance blossomed.

The forest had the animals.

The dirt had the grass.

The sky had the clouds.

The birds had the trees.

The moon had the stars.

The fish had the water.

And the sun had the earth.

Her friends were very content with their own lovers.

.....but where was hers?

Her heart was enormous and all her life, love is what she longed for.

She never knew what it was like to be loved by a real man.

The only love she ever knew of wasn't real.

It was the kind of "love" only boys give.

They used her.

Played her.

and worst of all....some even took advantage of her.

She was sure that her luck wouldn't get any better.

On a rainy day in autumn she met a creature of her own kind.

He made her heart flutter.

He kept her warm.

He filled her heart with loving words.

The girl was over the moon but became frightened.

Was this real?

What did she mean to him?

Did he truly like her or did he tell those magic words to 5 other women?

Most of all the thought she pondered the most was...

Was he scared?

Scared of losing her?

Would he be sad to see her go if she went away one day?

The wild girl had yet to find out.

She was fairly confident this was all wonderfully raw and real.

He said what he meant and he meant what he said.

She decided to take caution and keep walking.

She decided to let the journey begin..

Maybe she finally found herself a real man.

A man to go wild with.

First, for some reason, reading this poem reminded me of Tomahawk by Valentine Wiest. Don't know why, or how, the music fits, but that is what came to mind as soon as I read then title of the poem.
The first stanza also caught my attention, "Starless sky/I don't know where it is you've been hiding/but I need you tonight". The reason why is because I like how it sets the mood and tone for the poem, and also represents the wild girl's connection to nature.
This poem can be interpreted in two ways. The first is as a female Tarzan (fun fact: the author of Tarzan was challenged himself to write the worst book ever and then get it published. It end up becoming a best seller and eventually a Disney movie, which everything seems to become). The second, which is makes more sense, is that the wild girl is Mother Nature searching for a mate on a underlying quest to make herself whole. The men that this wild girl had encountered are us humans taking advantage of nature, in this case with implied sexual natures. The man that she thinks she has finally found could be the humans that have finally accepted and became one with nature as she had.
The fact that these are just two of my interpretations means that readers can have their own views, which means that this poem is excellently written to reflect that. Great job!

dark humor ....sometime it is suspicious when things are going in your favor continuously ....but there is always the positive and negative side of every person in this whole universe....awesome..:)))

This sounds like what really needed to be done was having the wild child become LESS WILD, at least enough to let her love find her without fighting through the fears and doubts. But the wild child should be careful not to squash completely her wild side...just take it down a notch...along with her cautious self-protection. This reader hopes that the wild girl and the creature of her own kind can harmonize when it comes time to cast fears aside and go for it while gleefully howling at the full and promising moon. A very nice piece of writing, Kathryn! take care...dan

Raw, honest and beautiful piece!
Relationships can be bad and often boys can be ruthless but it doesn't mean that its the end.. That there's none who can be your other half.. There's always hope and love can bloom despite all the circumstances.
Loved the metaphor!
An amazing write pouring with emotions!

I'm sorry guys have walked over you, it's so common these days but it will never be fair. You sound like such a sweet honest girl and if it's a reflection of who you really are than I believe karma will play to your favour. I really liked this one, thanks for sharing.

true that ;)
Beautiful writing. I like how through metaphors you talk about how in reality every girl is craving for a real man who actually loves her, and is scared of losing her, instead of the "love" only boys give. Well, at least I am like that haha. Well written.
