Daughter of Icarus

Daughter of Icarus

A Poem by Kathryn Smith

She burns and drinks it in

She soaks up the sun with her skin

It kisses her hair

Changes her colors

Keeps her warm

Engulfed in a blanket of comfort

She closes her eyes

She is a goddess

Misunderstood

Soft Spoken

A wild girl on the run

She flees through the forest

With the heart of a lioness

She has a temptation for danger

An ache to fly away

Taste for a poisonous thrill

The speed quickens everyday

Soon she'll lift up to the sky

She'll soar high with eager hungry eyes

Her heartbeat canters

She's certain of what she wants

But she must put on armor

A goddess must always guard her heart

Her heart is what carries her soul

And her soul carries his wings

She is the daughter of Icarus

Lover of Apollo

She'll take flight to the sun

When the cold comes she'll die

What is done must be done

No one dares to watch her fly

For she might find Elysium

Yet a goddess knows her place in the sky

She'll never be a victim of her father's lie.

"Yet a goddess knows her place in the sky
She'll never be a victim of her father's lie. "
I did like the positive ending. Thank you Kathryn for sharing the excellent poetry.

Kathryn, The band Kansas actually did a song, "Icarus: Wings of Steel," that had the wings allowing Icarus to not be encumbered by proximity to the sun. Your daughter of Icarus, unnamed, is apparently not limited to the plight that constrained her father and grandfather. Now, removing the mythological framework lies a (could be) modern day daughter, an uninhibited spirit, careening through life of her own volition and finding her own wings and avoiding her father's influence, his perceived lies to her. Her doom lies in the cold that is the emotional distance between daughter and father. At least that's MY interpretation. A VERY nicely written piece, K. When I saw "A Poem by Kathryn Smith" I couldn't wait to read it, and it is terrifically told story/poem. take care...dan

Didn't Icarus die because he went too high? Sun melted his wings or something. Pardon me, my Greek mythology is too bad. However, when the line talking about 'father's lie' made me think what did Icarus lie?
