Daughter of Icarus

Daughter of Icarus

A Poem by Kathryn Smith

She burns and drinks it in

She soaks up the sun with her skin

It kisses her hair

Changes her colors

Keeps her warm

Engulfed in a blanket of comfort

She closes her eyes

She is a goddess

Misunderstood

Soft Spoken

A wild girl on the run

She flees through the forest

With the heart of a lioness

She has a temptation for danger

An ache to fly away

Taste for a poisonous thrill

The speed quickens everyday

Soon she'll lift up to the sky

She'll soar high with eager hungry eyes

Her heartbeat canters

She's certain of what she wants

But she must put on armor

A goddess must always guard her heart

Her heart is what carries her soul

And her soul carries his wings

She is the daughter of Icarus

Lover of Apollo

She'll take flight to the sun

When the cold comes she'll die

What is done must be done

No one dares to watch her fly

For she might find Elysium

Yet a goddess knows her place in the sky

She'll never be a victim of her father's lie.

Very good job bringing this goddess to life awesome expression of detail down to the yellow wording loved many phrases her heartbeat canters caught my eye unusual phrasing and fits the story as do all the lines really well done

a wise woman. good of her to know better than to tempt fate and fly too close to the sun which was her father's demise. we must ever be careful pushing the limit. i really enjoyed this ... :)

Perhaps she may be found in that place at the ends of the earth to which certain favoured heroes/heroines were conveyed by the gods after death. Glad to read, through your poetic interpretation, she did not reach there on the same path as her father! Interesting and creative write - well done … :-)

Loved this take on an age old Greek story.... You really bring out her character to life. The story of Icarus always saddened me but you put a nice, hopeful twist to it. An amazing read!

This is brilliant, you make the warmth of her legacy come to life, comforting like a fireplace, raging like a huntress and graceful like a goddess. Divine write. I'm glad I read it, it inspired in many ways. Your piece can be perceived in so many ways too, it's very motivating.

Wow! You are too kind. Thank you very much!!! :D
The title of the poem really caught my eye. I was curious to see what you would write that would fall under the title. And it came out great. The poem had a great flow, smooth rhyming, and was a pleasant read. You really portrayed the core of the myth of Icarus, and put a great twist to it. The theme is still there also, the need to have the freedom that we deserve.
I found my favorite line to be "She'll never be a victim of her father's lie". Beautifully written.
I highly recommend listening to Icarus by Two Steps From Hell,as that was going through my mind as I was reading the poem.

Very nice. Leaves me guessing what the father's lie is. When the cold comes she dies, so I hope it is warm for her year round. Nice poem. Thank you for sharing.
