Shake It Off

Shake It Off

A Story by Kathryn Smith

I never miss a beat

I'm lightning on my feet

and that's what they don't see

I've got this music in my mind saying:

It's Gonna Be Alright

There's no doubt about it.

Sometimes life feels like I'm the one person in the dead center of a kickball game with millions of balls being hurled at me.

Ever notice how the good things you do, and all the hard work you accomplish isn't brought up or recognized?

What is talked about is all your mistakes.

Your failures.

Your flaws.

My mother is the kind of person who is very literal and will point out things that you'd wish someone would quietly ignore.

That happened today.

There's this girl.

This girl, friend dumped me because I wasn't happy in a relationship and broke up with a guy, years ago.

The guy was like her brother and because I broke up with him, she dubbed me Adolf Hitler. One of the most evil people in the world.

I went shopping with my mother and she walked by us.

My mother loudly informed me that I was given a very cold look and then went on to narrate the iciness that she felt from this girl.

Yes mom, there's someone out there who hates me.

Yes mom, I realized what she did.

Thanks mom, for pointing that out.

Whether we like it or not, we can't please everyone.

Everyone isn't going to like us.

and that is perfectly fine.

Taylor Swift taught me a valuable lesson.

A lesson to shake things off.

To be happy.

To dance and to keep shining even though people may not see it.

When you've got an albatross around your neck..

When everyone seems to be wanting something from you all at once..

When the kick balls that are being thrown at you double in numbers.

When it's you against the world...

Shaking it off is the best thing to do.

Life is too short to take things seriously.

To closely evaluate all the bad things that are occurring.

Simply smile!

Show people you're a happy and free spirited force to be reckoned with.

From the wise words of my favorite woman, Audrey Hepburn: "Happy girls are the prettiest girls."

I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.

If Taylor Swift can get you to not sweat life with all its storms, wars and...well...kickballs, I give you a lot of credit for putting that in your arsenal of life tools. The old saying, "Kill 'em with kindness..." comes to mind. Very nicely written, Kathryn. take care...dan
