Superwoman

Superwoman

A Story by Kathryn Smith

 For one so small

You seem so strong

This song is from one of my favorite childhood Disney movies. The reason why I loved it so much is because it reminded me of my own Mother.

Being so small, she made me feel so tall. I knew I was different and knowing she loved me either way made me feel so thankful. It was nice to have someone look at me and not care about my tininess.

There was nothing better than being loved by her.

There IS nothing better than being loved by her.

I will forever be thankful for my mother.

When she was expecting me, I was not growing.

The doctors strongly advised her to get an abortion.

She could’ve easily said yes.

Had she been someone else in this situation, I might not be here.

I could have been destroyed.

But my mother said no.

She had faith in me!

I can’t imagine how scary the entire situation was.

I honestly don't know how she did it.

She is my hero. She will forever be my hero.

I owe her more than I can give.

I was not the perfect child growing up.

I clashed with my mother more than my father.

I’ve always been daddy’s girl.

But looking back I was mama’s girl just as much, even though I might not have shown it.

I remember in Kindergarten, she came to pick me up from school.

My friend Lindsey told me to ignore her so I could ride the bus home with her.

It ripped my heart out trying, but I wanted to impress my friend.

It failed as I ran after my mom as she walked out saying:

“Okay, Kathryn! I’m leaving!”

There is nothing quite like a mother.

She is our best friend.

She is our light!

Our hope!

She is our shoulder to cry on.

She is our advice giver when we need it most, even if it’s not what we want to hear.

Mothers are ALWAYS right.

My Mother always can put a smile on my face.

She is brave.

She is beautiful.

Driven.

Strong.

Ambitious.

She is the most ambitious person I know.

Fearless.

When I was 14 I had a dream she died.

I can’t tell you how much joy and relief I had as I woke up and realized it was just a dream.

My mother is my life and my breath.

She raised me into a woman I am proud to see myself as.

She always wants the best for me and I can’t thank her enough!

I feel deep shame and regret for each time I made her upset.

For the times I have disrespected her.

We live and we learn.

Last year when I was in London, there was mother who wanted to get a family picture taken by a castle.

A little boy grumbled and refused to be apart of the picture. His mother pleaded with him and begged him. He sat down and still refused. You could tell his mother was disappointed.

It took every fiber of my being not to sit down next to him on the curb. I wanted to say:

Hey.

Your mother does so much for you.

Look at her.

Go take that picture! Make her happy.

One day you will miss her.

All you have to do is smile.

I wish I could tell all those angsty pre-teens and teenagers who don’t want to be seen with their parents, to quit their attitude and be proud to stand by their mothers and fathers.

One day they aren’t going to be here anymore.

We are going to miss their advice.

Their voices.

Their faces.

Their touch.

Their encouragement.

The endless joy and the pride in their hearts.

Mothers bring us into this world.

They deserve the best.

To my mother:  I know it’s been a rough mother’s day weekend.

The whole week has been a rough one.

I wish I could catch the strep throat and fever you have, so you can be better.

I’d rather take on your suffering  than watch you suffer!

I wish I could fly you out to Hawaii.

You deserve a vacation!

Please remember that I love you and will be forever grateful for what you do for me.

From buying me avocados at the grocery store, to giving me advice about life.

You might think I’m tuning you out but I’m not.

You might think I don’t care but I do.

You are my world.

Get well soon and I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s day.

Like I said earlier…

Mother’s day should  be every day!

And that’s how I plan to treat each day for the rest of my life.

Happy Mother’s Day!

I love you. You are my superwoman.

The bravest woman I've ever known.

Thank you for not giving up on me.

Love,

Kathryn

Wow--you really covered it, and then some. I don't know your age, but your words are certainly wise. There's a very sad truth that I must share, and it is that not all mothers are like yours. Some are not all-loving and caring, so when I hear a story like this, it warms my heart greatly.

Nice work with all the feelings one can have for his/her mother. Nothing left. Also a very nice mesage of respecting parents which our age has forgotten
