Laughing with friends until an insult is thrown out
"That's so gay." One of them squeals My heart drops and I feel a deep despair Such a common insult, not even directed at me But it was an insult to me So sharp and precise The word was a knife That cut me directly to my soul I was an insult What I am was an insult And I was hurt by it My body was made heavy with despair My friends continued to chatter As though nothing had happened Perhaps it was so common to them, nothing had But it changed me, and I knew Homophobia is normal It is so common, that it is subconscious And I realized that And I cried
