Farewell

Farewell

A Poem by Airila

He stayed by her for days on end
Watching as her chest rose and fell
The monitor beeped at her every heartbeat
She was slowly fading away with each passing moment
Her body was there; in that bed
But her brain, her organs were dying as she died
He stays by her side
Constantly holding her hand
Praying that she'd finally feel his touch
For 3 weeks nothing changed
For 3 weeks her condition kept getting worse
Until the doctors finally told him
That it was time to take her off the machines
There's no way that he could do that
Still filled with hope that she's wake up
Say his name and everything would be fine
Deluding himself that his wife of 10 years will ever say she loves him
He whispers in her ear every night "I love you"
Still anticipating her response
Nothing
His hope turned into despair
Then he made the decision
To say goodbye to his first love
His reason for being
Nothing could compare to the pain of losing her
He stands above her, crying tears of hopelessness
He can't watch as they begin to remove the tubes from her mouth
Until...she faintly whispers his name
"Bobby"
His frightened reaction to the sound of her voice
Wanting to hold her
But something isn't right
Her body is freezing cold
She's dying
"Bobby" she says again
Bringing himself down to her lips
She whispered in his ear "If I should die before you wake just know that love is all it takes. Just call for me, I'll keep you safe. I love you. FAREWELL"
Kissing her one last time in agony
She closes her eyes
Loosens the weak grip she had on his fingers
And slowly fades into the mist.
