Why

Why

A Poem by Silvanus Silvertung
"

This song just sort of flowed out of me. I didn't realize until afterward it's to the initial melody of Suzanne, by Leonard Cohen . . . Read it like a poem if you like. I won't be too offended

"

Why would I see you sweetly Any less than I could deeply To perceive your perfect semblance of a self.

Resemblance to a touching girl Remembering her intent to twirl To reach the regal end of you to melt?

Why would I hold a hair's breadth back A slice of life a hair in breadth To rhyme and rhythm into life to dance.

A simple step, an ankle song, A ribald royal sing along Where you and love were making itself once?

Why carry this to river’s path
beneath a tree, whatever’s left
a blossom into breathing in the wind.

Bless the soul that sent it true
and bless the maker of that too
a soul’s too precious to unlisten, so be kind.

Now all thats left, remembrance.
And still seen a person’s semblance
A silhouette of echoing entreaty.

But, besides belonging
Wishes past all wronging
The wind will always keep your feet this steady.

So Sight and melody rival true
so harmony can hear for you
A strength to squat against the street alone.

And here I am with second sight
A samite struggling with all his might
with heart all sinking - like a stone.
