We Both Know

We Both Know

A Poem by Pamela Murphy

We Both Know
by Pamela Murphy

Of course it is wrong
To want you the way I do
To dream of you at night
So that I wake and pace the floor
     in frustration.
It’s only infatuation
Or perhaps it’s my imagination
That there is something between us
Because I want it to be so
I may never know.

And what if people knew
If the secret were exposed
The so-called religious would shun us
Even as they committed their own sins
Cheating on their taxes or
Beating their wives behind closed doors
Such hypocrites.
For no one is without sin
I seek only happiness
And I long for your kiss.

Yes, perhaps I am wicked
A wanton soul about to crash
And to take you with me
Not unwillingly, you will go
Wrong or not
Too late to stop
You will come to my garden
Of course you will
Because we both know
It is so.
