Keeping myself to myself until somebody came along...

A Story by Sarrah.246

I look into the mirror that i stood in front of. Today is my 17th birthday, I had put on a pair of curve fitting jeans and a long sleeve shirt.
No one can know, no one will know, they will not find out what this family does to me.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath waiting for what might come as soon as i walk down those stairs. I opened them finally and turned the knob to my door swinging it open. There were exactly 17 steps to take until i reach my fate. I took those 17 steps as slowly as i could.
I put on a fake smiles, and enter the kitchen. My ‘mother’ is at the sink washing dishes, and my ‘father’ is at the table stuffing his face with bacon. I grab a roll as quick as i can an i try to run out the door. But i was too late.
Sarah Get back in here, NOW!” My ‘father’ screeched.
I slowly turned on my heels and walked back in there to await my father in the door frame. I saw his hand rise, but i knew better than to flinch away from it so i stayed intact. My head swung to the right after his slap, and my face instantly started to burn.
“You know better than to leave with out giving me a hug goodbye.” He smiled
I slowly stepped forward and he embraced me a little to much. I pulled him into a hug and he kept me there for almost 45 seconds. I wanted to gag, but know that would only consist of more conflict.
And i sure didn’t want to have to move to another foster home. Have to meet all new people, have a new family. A new everything! I wouldn’t stand for it. I only had to deal with one more year of this. I could take it like i have been for the last 5 years.
Once he pulled away i fake smiled up at him and turned to leave saying “goodbye” on the way out. I smiles for-real once i was out, 8 hours im free! I love school because its my escape from reality, i love to learn and meet new people.
It always takes me about 10 minutes each day to get there and 10 minutes to walk home. Those 10 minutes walking home i always pray that my parents wont find something to punish me about.
My first period was first aid. I aided in the office and there was never anything to do, so i just sat down and talked to the secretary sometimes i did homework i didn’t do last night. So today i picked my normal spot when the bell rang and started to twiddle my thumbs.
Then i saw the principle walk in with a guy i had never seen, he had ice blue eyes and shaggy black hair. He had snake bite on his lower lip with a crooked grin above them.
“Sarah this is Jesse, Jesse this is Sarah.” The principle introduced us.
We shook hands and Mr. Hanish told me that i would be helping show Jesse around and that if he had any questions he could come to me and ask.
We walked around our huge school until almost 2:30. We talked a lot, but mostly about why he came here. His dad had a really weird job, and instead of moving around all the time, his dad let him live with his grandmother. Then the questions started about me.
“So tell me about your home life..” He said looking at me as we sat outside on a bench.
“Umm.. I-i Li-live with My mom a-and d-dad.” This scared me i pulled at the ends of my longs sleeve shirt and looked down.
He looked at me weird because of my stuttering. I couldn’t talk about my family. I decided to change the subject.
“So what does your-” He interrupted me.
“Whats with you. No one said hi to you when we where walking?” He sounded truly worried.
“I like to um... keep to myself i guess.” I said nothing more.
“Oh...” He smiled a little and took out a piece of paper and scribbled on it. He handed it to me and said...
“This is my cell number text me sometime.” Then he got up and walked away.
I smiled for once because i felt loved... a little.
