Fools in the Twilight

Fools in the Twilight

Earth and God have a talk.

Worn down and tired, it's time to rest.

It's gotten the worst, but deserved the best.

War and famine has ravaged its land,

pollution and destruction, all due to man.

Man says that's progress, get out of the way,

you tree hugging whale watchers have nothing to say.

The Earth watched silently, accepting its fate.

Its wounds went untreated, it would soon be too late.

It once was a paradise, a world to behold,

but Man thought he could buy it, with bloodshed and gold.

You can't own beauty, you can't own the stars,

you can't own the Earth..like a moth in a jar.

Its tears fell silently, into polluted streams,

And GOD said, sleep dear Earth...sleep and dream..

He said, I created Man as I created You,

I just didn't realize what damage he would do.

But you'll still be here, after he's gone,

and the way he's going, it won't be too long.

And then I'll repair the hurt he has done,

and you'll be once more, as you begun:

The Jewel of The Universe, the apple of my eye,

things soon will be better, so don't you cry..

Man had his chance..to live in this place,

he forgot that I own it! A slap in MY face!

And now the time has come, the twilight of Man,

I'll do nothing to stop it, he'll go by his hand.

Killing and fighting in the name of ME!..

Cutting down my forests to the very last tree..

My streams and rivers are unfit to drink,

and air you can't breath, its come to the brink.

I tell you I've had it, I don't know what to think..

He destroys all your beauty, and puts waste in its place,

I don't understand it, it's just a disgrace.

One way or the other, it WILL be over soon..

Man will be gone, or he'll change his whole tune.

Maybe he will change, and things will get better,

he'll fix his mistakes..be a go getter..

Maybe he'll realize what a mess he has made..

I don't really think so, but don't be afraid.

He'll destroy himself, before he destroys you,

I wish it were different, but what can I do?

He made his own bed, knew wrong from right.

It doesn't make sense, poor fools in the twilight.

Author's Note

M.Fazekas
seems to me this poem is just as relevant today as when i wrote it in 95. it took me about 10 minutes to write it from beginning to end with pretty much what you see here..it was almost as if i were remembering it, the next line would come to me before i was finished writing the last.
