Red

Red

A Poem by Jonhoi Vaughn

the pieces are so small, they can be inhaled into the lungs

this is how the heart can do internal damage

when it shatters on the floor of the belly, into a million shards

rising like the ashes of a fallen phoenix

my skies have been painted red

Yes, this is what it feels like, and hopefully the pieces don't embed; they get broken down, processed, and eliminated like any other biodegradeable toxin.

The image of a broken heart doing further damage after it is broken. What a beautiful poem about heartbreak, especially the last line "my skies have been painted red".

red colors your poetry so often . . . I'm not just imagining that recurrence, I hope . . . this is small, but oh, so tall . . .

I've been missing you. Glad to see you post something new!
