Cactus BlanketA Poem by Jonhoi Vaughn
I was warned of this love.
A seed drowning in the ground.
The fight of fresh crisp leaves through soil.
Minerals and water coagulating in the stem.
The climb up from the bed of a soft petal.
It is the opium of being warned.
To watch love freestyle itself as a barbarian.
Of this love, I had been warned.
Walking in the endless desert noon,
Blanketed by the cactus of the night’s short reign.
Clutching a rose by the raw stem.
To float on an unforgiving riddle.
It is the opium…
The opium of planting one’s seed in the statue of a greek god called Ares.
To water that seed with tears.
