6 John recruitedA Chapter by Owenbevt3A broken man is restored by his enemies. As John awoke he slowly became aware threw the pain of his hangover that he was in a room. There was nothing much else worth saying about this room. It had gray block walls, a chipped gray floor, a cheap table, a cheap chair on which he was slumped and a heavy looking door which in a few more hours he may have felt well enough to get up and try opening. After many long lasting minutes with nothing to distract him from the throbbing in his head and inner torso the door unlocked ad in walked four men who like the room lacked anything about them worth describing except the each of them in some way looked like the fears he grogely remembered fleeing from last night. "you are Prof. John S. Calighan, most promising scientist of your small former nation and one time citizen activist" one of them stated. John snorted. "Do I look like a sodding 'grate scientist' to you?", wiping dried fish rot from his face to emphasize the point. With a thud which made him wince a thick file landed on the table. Slowly he flicked through it. It was all there, his early theoretical work to government weapon project on 'the trick', even his activist work with the 'West Riders'. (though wisely they did not provoke him by including reference to Rabbit) John silently looked at them and shrugged not bothering to deny any of it. Another of them now spoke up. "You will be aware of the good work of the International Science Institute". John didn't dignify this statement of the obius with a response so the man continued. "They are conducting one particular project, the workings of which of special interest to us." This John could not help but respond to. "F**k you. You expect me to use my reputation to spy for you? After everything... everyone you basterds cost me? Look at me what more could I lose, what do you think you can threaten me with? F**K YOU!!" and this he attempted to emphasize by launching a fist at the closest of them, something his drug weekend body failed to do ending with him sprawled on the floor. "Avoidable costs you and your friends chose to pay in a foolish stand against progress." one of them spoke down to him once they could see he was still conscious. "And yes there are things we could threaten even one so low as you with. But that is not what we are going to do." "Instead we are offering you an opportunity, which we know you will take" another of them continued. "we are going to clean you up and put you where you crave to be even if you do not currently acknowledge it " in the forefront of research at a great institution." "not if it means spying for the likes of you" John was about to say but he was cut off. "You misunderstand our intentions. We are not so optimistic as to think you would see the light and report the inner working of the program honestly to us, but if we put that remarkable brain of yours in the right place you will make sure the program does work, because trust me - you will not be able to resist the thrill of what they are discovering there. Other more loyal souls will do the spying, why we have been searching for you is to ensure said project achieve something worth our efforts to spying upon." © 2015 Owenbevt3 |
