Rule MakersA Poem by Owen AldinOriginally written for a novel ('World of Good'), the poem explores the growing ignorance of those trusted to lead society. They make the rules, We stay in depression. Open your eyes, We're still in oppression They make the rules, They crush your spirit. If you don’t stay alert, You aren’t going to hear it. They make the rules, Sharp like a knife. To kill your soul, To stop your life. They make the rules, Different for others. Prolonging the struggle, For me and my brothers. They make the rules, So stay in line, Keep your mouth closed, And you’ll be fine. You work all day, You work all night, For free or for pennies, You think the glory’s in sight As soon as you close, In for success, They take it away, The want your last breath. Nothing’s for free, Not even the air. The only thing you can keep, Is your growing despair. Have you ever tried to make a rule? It's liberating. The power and force, The facilitation. But they make the rules, There’s no way out, So much ignorance, Overbearing our shouts. Changes the rules? Don’t even try, You can be anything? It’s just a lie. I can, I will, I’ll decide, But in the end, Perhaps all we have left Is our PRIDE. © 2015 Owen Aldin |
