Autistic MomentsA Poem by Owen AldinA snapshot of a day working with children who are diagnosed with Autism.Set up the
room, Prepare for
lessons, Collect the
kids, 'White Sweet!' Hang up the
coats, Go upstairs. 'Red, yellow, green, blue!' Who’s here, You’re here, Find your name, 'Is that your
dad’s beard?' Lesson One, Lots of
learning, Lots of fun. Time for snack, 'You need to
stand up!' 'You need to
stand up!' 'There’s no
taking off your shoes.' What's the
time, 12.09! Need to swap, No time to
rhyme, Who do I have? 'Yes I have
brown eyes,' 'And Yes black
hair.' I’m very
impressed, You learned
something new, How to cut
peppers, And make an
omelette too. Now it's lunch, Plain noodles,
Plain rice They eat it
all, It must be
nice. Let go outside, Ah over the
fence, The ball, the
hoop, And Mr Potato
Head! Time for sport, Or sometimes
dance, They have the Moves
Like Jagger, Or clap their
hands. End of the day, After all that
fuss Go get your
coat, Or you’ll miss
the bus. But wait a
second, You’ve been
quiet all week! I spoke too
soon, ‘Is that your
missing teeth?’ © 2015 Owen Aldin |
