Does Christmas music and people wishing me Merry Christmas offend me? Yes, being subjected to Christmas music on the broadcast radio is offensive. By the time January rolls around I’m ready to choke people who say “Merry Christmas” to me when they wouldn’t walk across the street to spit on me the other 11 months of the year. Then they say things like, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” I hate to burst their bubble, but MONEY is the reason for the season.
I’ve read the bible, cover to cover, many years ago. (I hate to ruin the ending for some of you, but the devil did it.) Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall anything about December 25th. In fact, I seem to think Jesus was born during the harvest season. I remember reading about Jesus asking his followers to do things for his father, (God.) The only thing I can remember Jesus saying to his followers to do for him was when they were dining at what was to be known as “The last supper” and he broke the bread and said, “This is my body, keep doing this in remembrance of me.” Then he drank from the cup and said, “This is my blood, keep doing this in remembrance of me.” Which makes me wonder, would a man who humbles himself by washing the feet of his disciples expect the world to honor his birthday?
If I had children I wouldn’t wait until December 25th. To give them the things they need such as winter coats, boots and gloves. I think I would give things at a time that they are needed. I remember as a lad growing up in the New England winter praying for a warm coat for Christmas. We always got something to wear and something to play with. In the really hard times in was a pair of pants with the pocket cut out.
So why December 25th? I’ve been told that this date wasn’t just picked from a hat. December 25th. Is about the time that the daylight hours start getting longer. So as an effort to bring Christians together with Sun worshipers Christmas came to be. Then somewhere along the line they brought in the tree for the Druids. So I’ve been told. I agree with most that think Jesus was the greatest man who ever lived. I say most because I know of at least one person who thinks Henry Kissinger was the greatest man who ever lived, Henry Kissenger.
I’ve flipped the finger to Santa, and walked out of restaurants and taverns where asking nicely to lay off the Christmas music has failed to produce desired results. From Thanksgiving to New Years is a tough time for me, it goes better if I think of it as any other time of year. Do what you want and don’t worry about my feelings, and I’ll try to make it to January without putting a .45 in my ear.
When people wish me Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas I try not to be rude and respond with something appropriate, such as “Thank You, you too.” After all, they’re not trying to offend me; they’re just spreading good cheer. I would like to see good cheer spread a little more evenly, a little less in December, a lot more the rest of the year.
When self proclaimed Christians say, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” I think; “Revenue is the reason for the season.” Jesus did good year round, why can’t the rest of us? I try to do good year round, I wish I were better at it.
