Pandora's BoxA Story by Avery Howard“Just give me the
box, damn it!” a boy yelled as he ran from me who were currently shooting at
him and a girl who ran alongside him. She held an ornate gold plated box
tightly in her arms. She looked at the boy and screamed, “No way in hell!
You’ll open it!” The boy looked to the girl, taking in her mid-back length red
hair which was curly and was pulled into a loose pony tail, and screeched,
“God! Do you want to die that bad?!” The girl came to a complete stop and turned
to the boy, yelling, “Do you!?” She turned to the boy, looking at his chin
length brown hair that blew in the wind before, adding, “Do you know what will
happen if we open the box!?” Just then a bullet whizzed in between the two
teens urging them to continue forward. They ran until
they came to an embankment that looked as if it had once been a river. They
both jumped into the trench and ducked down. The boy looked to the girl looked
and yelled over the gun shots, “What? Will the world end?” The sarcasm in the
boy’s voice didn’t escape the girl as she pulled the box closer to her body and
yelled, “YES! YES, IT WILL!” The boy looked at the girl and said,
incredulously, “Really?” The clutch the box and said, “Yes, That’s what I just
said. If we open the box the world will end. And people will die.” The boy
looked at the girl and says, “So, what your saying is we’re gonna die either
way?” The girl didn’t answer instead she simply looked down at the box. The boy
quickly stood up and yelled, “Well Screw that! If I’m gonna die, I wanna-” The
boy was cut off by the sound of gunfire. The boy fell down to the ground as the
sound of gunshots faded to an echo. “ADAM!”
The girl screamed as she crawled over to the boy, Adam. She turned him
over and said, tears forming inn her eyes, “Say with me. Don’t die.” Adam
looked up at the girl riddled with holes, blood dripping down his chin and
reached his shirt. He pulled out a key, ornate silver with a apple shaped bow.
It was held on a silver chain and Adam pulled it off of his neck saying through
his blood-filled mouth, “Take this and open the box.” The girl shook her head
and said, tears now streaming down her face, “No, I can’t” Adam looked up at
the girl and pushed the key into the girls hand pleading, “Please, Pandora.
You… Must live. For me.” Pandora, nodded and said, “Okay. For you.” With that the life
left Adams eyes and Pandora was left alone. She looked at the silver key and
the golden box, knowing that she couldn’t keep her promise to Adam. Instead she
pocketed the key and clutched the box back to her chest. She was trying to tune
the world out when the sound of footsteps made her look up to see a white
suited man. His bald head glistened in the sun light as he smirked, pulling at
a scar over his lip and he said, “Hello, Decedent of Pandora.” Pandora pushed
herself up against the opposite wall as the man stepped into the riverbed
followed by two other men in black suites, dark shades and toting machine guns.
The man in white held out his hand and said, “The box if you will.” Pandora
tightened her grip on the box and said, “Over my dead body.” The man in white
smirked and chuckled, “That can be arranged.” He pulled out a silver pistol and
cocked back the hammer before placing the barrel inches from Pandora’s head.
The man placed his finger on the trigger and said, “Any last Words?” Pandora
swallowed and looked up at the man in white before saying, “Do you’re worst.”
The last thing she heard was the bullet leaving the barrel. Pandora collapsed
to the ground, still clutching the box. The man in white looked to his henchmen
and said, “Get the box and search for the key.” One goons grabbed the box and
other searched the two coursed for the key. Eventually, the goon found the key
tucked into Pandora’s pocket and the three men began to make their way from the
scene of their crime. On their way to open the box and end the world. Unfortunately for
them only a descendent of Pandora could open the box and they’d just killed the
last one. © 2016 Avery Howard
