A Chapter by Orion
"

An intoxicating story about dealing with pain and drugs.

"
The lock twisted with a clang. Matt pushed the creaky door and entered his apartment. The mat read «Home Sweet Home,» although he found it neither sweet nor like home at all. The place was always a mess and it served mostly as a sleeping accommodation, like all of Matt’s previous apartments. His job was not something to brag about. It was not an actual job, to be precise. He had to change places pretty frequently in order to stay in motion. Being a drug mule you do not want to be easily detectable. Only three weeks in this flatlet and were enough for him to convert it in a storehouse.
Matt stumbled across the room, filled with suitcases, pizza boxes and phone books. He was in a bad shape. The last deal at the docks was a near disaster, as the Chinese apparently had not secured the place efficiently or the deal leaked out earlier. Either way somebody had called the cops and the party was scattered just before their arrival. Matt had to run like the wind in the shadows to avoid arrest and stop to shed his clothes inside a passing garbage truck. His muscles were sore and his heart was still pounding faster than normal. Even after four years and a half in this job the thrill of being ratted out was still vivid.
He threw his sweaty clothes on the sofa and stepped in the small bathroom. «This job is not for me any more» he thought, while washing his face. Across the mirror was standing a tired man, although he was only twenty four. Feeling his wrinkles on his face confirmed his thought. Running out of energy, Matt almost fell asleep sitting on the toilet. He stood up and flushed when his sleepy eyes started from their sockets in shock. The running water was dark red as if blood was pouring in the toilet. Not only was he right but the news was even worse. He opened the toilet tank and in a pool of blood there was a severed head. He nearly threw up at the sight of it, but he tried to lift it in case he recognised it. Grabbing it from its curly hair he brought the head to eye level and tried to overcome his disgust. It took only a couple of seconds to recognise its previous owner. A customer of his from which he last heard about a month ago delivering some crack. He was not a regular customer but Matt was already trembling.
What was a head doing in his house? What was it supposed to mean for Matt? And more importantly, how did it get in there in the first place? All these questions were running through his mind in fractions of a second. He tossed the head back with a splash and left the bathroom. «This place must have been broken into. What am I supposed to do now?» He wondered. He stopped running in circles for a moment to check the lock only to find out that no sign of breaching was visible. Running out of ideas he felt more unsafe than ever. He could not think of an incident that could be connected with it and the docks flop seemed too recent to be related. He grabbed his coat and stormed out of his apartment. He knew he could not go to the police, since his place was a criminal hideout and his name had to remain unknown to the cops anyway.
«I’ve got to find Bones soon or I am in bad trouble» he decided knowing that his friend’s house would be a good shelter until he figures out what happened. He ran down the dark stairs and before he reached the entrance he felt a cold metal on his temple. He paralysed immediately and he did not even turned his head when a voice spoke. «Are you… heading somewhere?» said the man shooting him point-blank and laughing at his own joke.
