Chapter III

Chapter III

A Chapter by OrangeEyes

Sleep was a thing that as Immortals you barely ever needed to worry about, but today I found myself craving it.

My mind was exhausted but yet still reeling with thoughts, Adrian was back tomorrow which I was both happy and sad about.

Yes, I had missed Adrian like crazy, after all no matter what he was still my father but I knew that when he did come back I would be no longer able to look into my vision without him questioning it, with Isaac it was different he just cast aside me spending more and more time in our fathers library as nothing out of the normal, and in a way he was right, but for once I wasn’t looking up books about other people’s lives, I was researching my own.

I stifled a yawn, looking outside as the sun stared down at me brightly through the window, I always wished that maybe just once I could feel what that was like, the hot sun beating down on your skin, but as soon as I took even the slightest step outside, even if it was only for 5 seconds, I knew I would turn to ash, my remains lying there with nothing but bones.
This was how most Immortals ended their lives, finally realising that they had nothing left to do in their life but die, it was a sad death but not something painful, Adrian had come close to taking this way out as an escape after our mother died, but he knew he could never do that not with Isaac and I still here to look after, he was a creator, they dedicated their entire lives to others, Adrian could never be that selfish.

I heard the soft snores of Isaac floating down from his room at the other end of the hall, I didn’t need to strain my ears to listen as an Immortal were trained to hear the slightest and softest sounds without even thinking, Isaac barely slept but for once I was happy that he was, his energy had still not yet returned fully from the day of the forest and her needed all the rest he could get, I knew that he hadn’t taken enough of my energy, only enough for him to stand, but I also he knew that he would never have taken anymore then what he had, never running the risk of hurting me.

I tried hard to lie down at my own soft bed but even though I was extremely tired it was almost like I was too exhausted to sleep.

So instead I just opted to lie down, staring at myself in the large mirror that hung opposite me, my long black hair lay in a messy bun, pieces sticking out everywhere, lately I had been too busy to truly care, my green eyes stared back at me, I was the only one in my family that had this eye colour both Isaac and Adrian’s eyes were a bright blue, I assumed I had gotten them from my mother though I had no proof to confirm this theory.

Something in the distance shook me from my thoughts forcing me to face my window, I could have sworn I saw a shadow in the distance staring up at me but in a blink it was gone, I shook my head blaming the tiredness for putting the sound and image in my head, but as I tried to fall asleep once more I couldn’t help but notice the absence of snoring that I had grown accustomed to, Isaac had heard the sound too.

Quickly, I crept out of my room, into Isaac’s where I found him sitting quietly by his window, focusing intently on something in the distance.

I approached him quietly, he gave me a slight nod as if he was acknowledging my presence, turning I looked to where his eyes were drawn, there it was again, the shadow that I had only briefly caught a glimpse of in my window, but now that I had a better look the distorted shape almost looked one of a humans.

“Who is he”, I asked Isaac silently, “I have no idea, where too far away to see a face”, Isaac continued to stare at the man almost like he knew something but was too scared to say his thoughts allowed.

“We should go check it out”, he said finally, I looked at him bewildered, “The suns out, if we go now we’ll burn to ash”, Isaac looked up at the sky, as if he was just noticing this fact, all of a sudden I heard the sound of small raindrops falling, sure enough looking outside, the once vibrant blue sky had turned a dark grey.

In astonishment I turned to Isaac, he had never mentioned he could do that, he turned to me with a smile on his face, “Suns not out anymore, quick the shadows moving”.
I ran outside following as close as possible to Isaac, we were chasing the shape that we had seen from the window, but now we were closer it was starting to look more and more like a human, an Immortal to be specific.

Isaac paused for a minute, forcing me to run past him, I spun around quickly, shocked of his sudden stop, he focused on his hands, in a split second flames appeared, once again I was surprised that he hadn’t mentioned this, clearly I wasn’t the only one keeping a secret in this family, he threw the flames in his hand with a great force, controlling it so the rain did not effect it, it went straight for the strange Immortal in front of us but apparently the being had noticed because just as it was about to make contact the man disappeared, leaving an eagle soaring away in its place, the strong flames making contact with the tree in front, quickly Isaac put the flames out.

He turned towards me in shock, “Was that a……”, his words failing him, “A shifter, I think so”, my face reflecting his, “I’ve never seen one before”, Isaac said snapping out of his momentary confusion, “What do you think he was doing here?”, he turned back to where the Shifter had vanished, “I have no idea”.
