A Poem by Ookpik

Poets are getting hysterical;
news media cycles,
cashes, cycles again,
running a small marathon
to the tune of ad revenue and
profit margins; the world grows
more confusing by the minute,
harder to predict, and while we attempt
to lip read
the private conversations
made by
wealthy politicians, god only knows
what might be happening
.
behind the curtains
            we cannot see.
.
.
.
This is an age of manufactured consent,
of geo-political gymnastics,
theatricality, bread, games,
a stage,
.
and I cannot shake the feeling
that its true design
is to distract us
from that which we cannot afford
.
to see.
.
.
.
If I was making big decisions - the kind
that decide
the outcome of a country - I wouldn't want
anybody to be paying attention to me,
.
I'd want their eyes on someone else
so I could move my pieces, privately.
.
.
