.
. . A stranger, lost In an even stranger land . . The road to Skagway had that sensation, This misty, other-worldliness That gathers itself around the interior of your car As you emerge out of autumn, and amber, And begin a slow ascension Into the Alaskan alpine - . . numinous, heavenly, an embarkation into some hidden, secretive beyond. . . When I took the road, I was touring my parents - Celebrating my adult, financial independence - More preoccupied with their experience Than I could've been with my own. . I didn't indulge myself any spirituality; I didn't take the time to feed my soul. . I just earmarked the road, made note Of the eruption of color that became Yukon's short, and sudden autumn, And acknowledged That there was a train-route That ran parallel to the highway, . Telling myself That when I had the time, I'd have to book us each . a proper ticket. . . . It's strange, I think my thirties may end up being defined by that act - scheduling something for later . that my spirit longs for, now. . . .
