...A Poem by Ookpikhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NK4ODq1a4Y. . I happened downtown, towards the quarter With the old, heritage churches: . The ones that appeared to have been built with purpose, The ones that looked as though they’d been risen According to somebody’s drawings, According to a pre-designated plan. . . There was an urn Beside the heavy, double-set church’s
doors - The ones that stood like gates,
that seemed As though they might swing
inside and out Depending on the need of the
most recent . passerby. . There was a sign that’d been
hung over it That read: “anonymous Q & A,
leave a letter and God will get to you when he
has the time.” I laughed, feeling as though I
already understood . that god didn’t operate that way. . But, Whether out of curiosity, interrogative,
Or a kind of casual passivity, I took some paper from the stand
beside it . and wrote: . . I suspect
that human beings are driven by an innate desire to
pursue that which they don’t already have. And I cannot reconcile
that people may be designed to want, perpetually, and to find
only temporary satisfaction from obtaining what they’ve
chosen to pursue. . I
suspect that we were designed this way, as a preacher might tell me,
so as to be driven towards the only desire that matters: caritas,
divine purpose, a closeness to that which exists beyond the
world. . But so
here is my question, if the pursuit of divinity is fundamentally driven by
desire, a possessivity or a need to obtain, wouldn’t that defeat
the purpose of seeking divinity in the first place? . . It’s been a few years since I
wrote that question. God hasn’t answered, and I
suppose it’s because . he just didn’t have the time. . . . © 2024 Ookpik |
