.
. . Christmas, on Parole . . The air rings over the pavement - Rings - reverberating its pitch Between the white painted lines That stretch before the sidewalk; . Echoing in throes, resounding within my ears: . A dog-whistle, blowing an inaudible pitch Over the towering of the streetlights, Over the crowned spires and Skyscrapers, . Over the bowed, indignant heads, Over the hushed, distant jingle Of a Christmas carol, commentating Atop the rapturous parade . Of a busied supermarket, Over commerce, exchange, Over the beeps, of debit machines, The scattering of loose change, . Over the slouched, and shadowed grimace Behind the slurring mutter Of a mindlessly delivered . Thanks. . . As my boots touch the slush And the bus pulls away behind me, I can't help but see The muddy colors that emerge . Where grime encounters snow … . And I think to myself That such celebration Isn't really the same When it's enacted, on parole. . . .
