.
. . A dream Just a dream I . I dreamt that I was a child again - Clad in furs, with my father and I Selecting knives, and rifles Before walking out to hunt - . A man's knife, or a child's knife, A man's rifle, or a child's rifle. . . II . As a child, I chose the larger tools - The larger, finer blade, The higher caliber weapon, But, fearing mis-selection . Still took both to carry with me. . The small, and wieldy, Opposed to the larger possibility. . . III . My father followed, holding the pack On the basis that when we'd left town And the roads ended I would carry it all alone. . . IV . Before the precipice, we reached a wreck - The skeleton of a freighter That, broken and beached, Obstructed the gravel path. . . V . As we crossed it together, I transformed - Still a child, but no longer myself, Still small, and delicate, With careful, selective eyes, . But as, instead, outside the one that moved Watching from beyond, rather than looking from within. . . Krishna, God Child, Deific in all plurality . . When we'd finished crossing I'd returned back, and the sensation Of being separate Had disappeared entirely. . . VI . When the road ended, and being eager, I spied movement - the light rustle of small game: . Sik-Sik - ground squirrel Looming before my childlike eyes . Such an animal wouldn't have been worth the bullet But because I'd brought both rifles, I could use the smaller caliber to take it. . . VII . I wanted to hunt, for the same reason I wanted to leave home alone . Child to a man - coming of age . But, besides knowing that what I really sought Lay beyond, I chose to hunt immediately, and in my impatience Loaded the larger caliber . Into the smaller gun And sent the bullet Spinning down the barrel Only to burst the steel out at the end. . . Do not allow apprehension To confuse the purpose of your action; Move with surety, with clarity, with intention, And allow not uncertainty . To deflect, or distract From the true aim of your attention: . Singular in purpose; singular in thought; . Singular, in affectation. . . .
