A Poem by Ookpik

You cannot love those whom you cannot feel -

Those whom you cannot touch and breathe in,

Understand, affirm and console.

It is the nature of the deepest love to share

And you cannot share beyond superficiality

With someone who is not beside you.

You can intend to love,

You can make efforts to understand

But without union it remains a half love -

Intention and effort are not the equivalents.

There is a vulnerability to it that most try to escape,

They circumvent the risk at the expense of that which is inexplicable.

Inexplicable love, the deepest kind and the one that hurts most to break,

Only occurs when you waive the right to protect yourself

And develops only when you grow to realize

In the others arms you are safe.

Which is why the betrayal cuts deepest

When hearts like these are inclined to break.

It is only when vulnerable that you can feel betrayed

And yet to live life absent this connection

Is as much a half-life as half a love

Is an exercise in being afraid.
