Two Hosts and a Model: The Truth
INT. OFFICE. BEN and NATHAN are sitting down. NATHAN is at a computer, BEN is in thought.
BEN
Nathan, you know what just hit me?
NATHAN
(staring at screen) No, Ben, I can’t read your mind. Thank goodness.
BEN
We aren’t living up to our name.
NATHAN
(turns to BEN) What?
BEN
The name of the show is Two Hosts and a Model, right?
NATHAN
Yeah…
BEN
But there are two models. It’s Two Hosts and a Model, yet we have two models. It should actually be Two Hosts and Two Models. Thus, we aren’t living up to our name.
NATHAN
Well, if that’s how you wanna think of things, what about Johnny?
BEN
Good grief, you’re right! It should be Two Hosts, Two Models and a Field Reporter. We really aren’t living up to our name.
NATHAN
Then there’s the new field reporter chick... what was her name?
BEN
I don’t remember; but now that makes it Two Hosts, Two Models and Two Field Reporters. We are lie, Nathan. We are one, big lie!
NATHAN
Oh, its okay, Ben. It’s just a title. It doesn’t have to mean anything.
BEN
But it is a big deal, Nathan. If we can’t be honest with our audience in the title, when can they ever expect us to be honest?
NATHAN
Ben, we lie to our audience all the time.
BEN
What?! When, how?
NATHAN
Well, just think about the way that we make the audience think that we all hate each others guts.
BEN
But I do hate DeWitt.
NATHAN
I know, Ben, but you don’t hate me, do you?
BEN
Only on Tuesdays.
NATHAN
Exactly. And Sarah doesn’t hate our guts.
BEN
Oh, yes she does.
NATHAN
No she doesn’t, it’s just an act.
BEN
Sarah treats me the same whether there’s a camera aimed at her cute, little face or not.
NATHAN
Really?
BEN
Yes.
NATHAN
She doesn’t do that to me. We get along fine when we’re not in TV world. BEN
Really?
NATHAN
Yeah.
BEN
Oh, my… Sarah hates me and likes you? How does that work?
NATHAN
I don’t know. It’s not like we’re the same person, so inevitably there are going to be some people that like me and dislike you and vice-versa.
BEN
What about Rachel? Do you and Rachel get along?
NATHAN
Yeah. We email all the time; we’re friends on Facebook and MySpace.
BEN
Really?
NATHAN
Yeah.
BEN
She never talks to me.
NATHAN
Wow, really? Rachel must really hate you.
BEN
Lies… all these lies. When were you going to tell me the truth, Nathan?
NATHAN
You’re over-exaggerating this, Ben.
BEN
Do you talk with Johnny?
NATHAN
Nobody talks with Johnny.
BEN
Whew, at least that much is true. (beat) What about you? Do you hate me? Am I the only co-host in your life?
NATHAN
You’re the only co-host for me, Ben. You know that.
BEN
I’m not sure I know anything any more. (beat) At least tell me you still hate DeWitt.
NATHAN
I never hated DeWitt.
BEN
WHAT?! What do you mean you never hated DeWitt?!
NATHAN
We get along quite well, actually. We often meet for lunch and she discusses the ‘60s and hippies while I discuss disco and Audrey Hepburn.
BEN
But she’s a democrat! And a very liberal one at that.
NATHAN
I’m not really a politically motivated person.
BEN
What?! I thought you were a republican.
NATHAN
No; I don’t even vote. I thought you knew all this.
BEN
That’s it, I can’t take it anymore. I have to get out of here.
NATHAN
Why, what’s the matter?
BEN
The lies, Nathan… the lies bother me.
NATHAN
Actually, it seems like the truth bothers you.
BEN
You’re right; I prefer the lies! Why can’t we go back to the way things were?
NATHAN
Sounds good to me.
BEN
So, I’ll just keep believing whatever I want about you and everybody else.
NATHAN
And I’ll just go on letting you believe a lie.
BEN
Sounds refreshing. I’m feeling better already.
