A Poem by Drea Dawson
"

Summer 2010

"
I see you over there
with your bright bullshit smile
removing lint from your jeans
I see you ignoring history

I sense you
telling yourself you are better off
but silently slumping towards the floor
if only she were more
of this
and less of that, right?
I'm sure you are idolized
and compliments are effervescent
catering to your prepubescent
need
to be loved by a little girl in awe

I'm sure you impress her easily
with your cunning wit
about things she hasn't dealt with yet
Believe me babe, I know of the beauty in youth
I see you
walls ever migrating, soundtrack always changing,
eyes steady, yet hidden from view
I sense you
and sometimes I hate you for being gone
Other times I thank the place you made,
as it is filled with a love that stays

I am the matchbox queen
I know I made you tired
and you made me mean
but in the end, all we have are words
spread across a robot page
And I know my words
don't hit the same way
but I'd be a liar
if I said
you don't miss me
in the end
