Tornado

Tornado

A Poem by Drea Dawson

In my mind
I swooped in like a
Persistent tornado
Covered your mouth
With my hand
And held your face close to mine
So you could hear me
Refuse to lie to you
And stop you
From stopping me

I would tell you
How you change my smile
How you make me dance more
How you move me to silence

And how I watch you
While you play with your hands
When you should be playing with me
I see you
Circling my thighs with your eyes
And quietly looking away

It was slow in my hands
It made my head tilt back

You’re so smooth
Like a silky joke,
Told by a dirty old man
With big hands
And a deep set grin

You were sizing me up
You had a measuring tape
And a picture of her
Held close to my face

Me and my dirty mouth
Getting in the way
Of your Friday afternoon
You hung in when
you should’ve hung out

I was on the outside of the club
All the pretty girls were gone
They were inside with you
And you said you wanted me
From a cell phone conversation
Over an hour later,
I was on the balcony, sailing
Off the momentum of those words

You were behind the glass
I was on the outside looking in
I was so envious of all those girls
Cuz they got to watch you dance
While I sipped my whiskey in the streets

You were Electric Feel,
And I was Sleeping Lessons,
Despite the distance and the noise,
We were both in the same place.
