Umbrella

Umbrella

A Poem by Drea Dawson
"

Winter 2008

"

Im lit up
Electric circuits across my chest
Pounding across my heart
Making sweet noise for you

The changing tide
Where once it went left,
Now the water goes right

You create color
In backgrounds of pure white
You create music
In the midst of utter silence

Like an army commander
Sizing up his enemy
I see your threat to me
But I don’t pull back my infantry
I don’t slam shut the gates
I watch you
Watch me wait
In this game we play

I watch you make mistakes
And try and hide them
Perpetual Mr. Cool
Devoid of shyness
You are bright and pure
Such a stark color contrast
To all my black and blue

When we get high
You get tongue-tied
This little sliver of you
And your umbrella smile
You show so much with it
Softly you seem
To truly appreciate life
And quietly engage me
