Sunder

Sunder

A Poem by Drea Dawson

I think you
Want to keep it heavy
You want to think of me
And then feel bad for feeling
Thirsty
Cuz you know better
But that won’t stop your hands from
Looking for me

You send me newspaper clippings
Little snippets of who you really are
So I can try to read between the lines
Fit melodies between guitar chords

We both write about everyone else
Except now we are
In each other’s view
And our subjects are a little harder
To pin down
So I could show you

I saw you
So I
Superbly
Sumptious
Sunder

You can fool the audience
You can lie as hard
As you can turn
That tourniquet

But you can’t fool another artist
Oh babe, cuz I will sing it
Before you even write it

So we are left silent in our perception
And we lean into it comfortably
Like a curb
We say nothing to each other
But in our separate rooms
Blank pages are filled with
The same words

You are not alone if you hate it
It’s a distracting deviation
A parody of existence
To entertain the gods
The way you
Careen and then
Supercede
The applause

I saw you
So I
Superbly
Sumptious
Sunder
