Paper Cup

Paper Cup

A Poem by Drea Dawson

I want to cover my mouth

I'm so in love

afraid it will just spill out

out onto the pavement

I want to hide my eyes

I'm so into you

I'm flashing bright lights

out onto the pavement

It seeps into your head

like some leaky faucet left running

God called you on long distance

said Hello from a paper cup

And you carry it around

like some security blanket you’re hugging

But you never tell anyone

you never make a sound

You and I have this big secret

We can't even say it out loud

because to breathe it

is to live it

and we aren't ready for that step

It seeps into your head

like some leaky faucet left running

God called you on long distance

said Hello from a paper cup

I want to cover my mouth

I'm so in love

afraid it will just spill out

out onto the pavement

It feels more of a song than a poem.
