Frisson

Frisson

A Poem by Drea Dawson

Music is different for me

It’s like screaming in my veins

Every cell in my body

A chorus of red and white

I’m soaring inside

My jaw clenched tight

Like I’m about to explode

And to some, it’s just a radio

I bleed percussion

Muffled kick drums

And out of tune pianos

I beat my chest

And tap my feet

Skin goose bumped by

Sopranos

Yielding their vulnerability

Research tells me

Music gives me Dopamine

To the beat, I concede

And let it wash me clean

Because my life has left me dirty

And you gave me a nosebleed

Music has always freed me

Because my life has been a cage

Just putting the headphones on

I can travel to another place

My eyes shut tight

My mouth turned upward

Ready to accept

That symphony of love

I bleed percussion

Muffled kick drums

And out of tune pianos

I beat my chest

And tap my feet

Skin goose bumped by

Sopranos

Yielding their vulnerability
