Every Verbal Blow

Every Verbal Blow

A Poem by Drea Dawson
"

"
I’m gonna go away for a while
I’ll leave when you’re gone
You can keep talking
But I won’t respond

I can’t take this anymore
You called me a thief
Painted me in colors
From a different palette
Taking your hate
And throwing it on my canvas
Smearing over my scene
Made a monster out of me
Because I loved you so
So what, you said
And I shrunk in my shoes

I don’t need the abuse
I won’t miss the arguments
The next daily installment
Of how much you take me for granted
How eloquently every verbal blow is landed
Before you run away again
Because everything is more important than this

And you’ve got some nerve
To paw at me for sport
For that fucked up smile
That I’ve grown tired of seeing
From the other side
Of a tear stained face

I am not Her
Whoever you’re projecting on me
I am made of a different metal
And although I bend
And I’m malleable
You almost snapped me in two
And I almost let you

Very nice piece. Excellent word choices (except "For that fucked up smile" which, to me, seemed out of place with the eloquence of the rest of the writing) and imagery. A number of very beautifully constructed phrases, my favorite of which is "Taking your hate / And throwing it on my canvas". Excellent work.
