I'D CHANGE NOT EVEN ONE

I'D CHANGE NOT EVEN ONE

A Poem by Miss Sharon
"

Precious hours spent....

"
I'D CHANGE NOT EVEN ONE

If I could choose one day to keep
All sealed and ribbon bound,
I'd keep the day that you were born
As treasures deftly found.

Like pieces on a puzzle board,
I'd rearrange not one,
For perfect was your birth to me...
I'd change not even one.

How precious were the hours spent
While watching as you played.
My grateful heart beat strong and proud
Each moment that you stayed!

But...now that death has claimed your soul
And I am left to mourn,
I wish that it would claim me too
Amid this weeping storm.

The pain of losing a loved one never truly goes away. You, my friend, have suffered the worst loss of all. Losing a child is just unthinkable. The love expressed in this poem is a tribute not only to your son, but to the maternal love you felt and still feel towards him. I wish I could reach through the monitor and hug you, Sharon. Your words are honest and filled with brutally sad emotion. A poem very well written, but I wish you never had to write it. Lydi**

Thanks so much Tate! ~Sharon
The death of a child is a tragedy for the parent, even if that child has reached adulthood. The speaker here has undergone such a tragedy, as the last verse tells us. The grief is yet fresh, and comfort is not visible. Only time will provide balance for the precious years that were spent together.

How awfully sad about the passing of your child... but think of all the wonderful years you spent together....from your child's first breath until his/her last... think of all the happy times and the joy you experienced.... even with all of that, saying goodbye to your child has to be the worst thing a parent has to do. The gentle memories will endure forever Sharon.
Best to you, B.

dear Sharon… it seems that the day our Child was born can never be by chance.. it seems to be Heaven sent. Nothing can compare. A child becomes part of your heart 💜 and soul. gently, Pat

Thanks so much Pat for your lovely review! I appreciate you. ~Sharon
Whether this is to be taken literally or as an extended metaphor, the theme of loss, grieving, helplessness, and sadness are very well expressed. Whoever has ever loved another knows what it's like to wish to share in the beloved's pain, suffering, and even death, because separation from them feels unbearable. However, in times like that, one realizes that the best one can do is cherish the moments that were given to be shared. I like the structure, the rhyme scheme, and the clarity of this poem.
