VELVET

Facing a new year ahead I begin to reflect on earlier happier times of childhood, when I was a young tomboy.  My fondest memory is of the day Dad and I went to an auction to bid on my first horse!  She had a black mane and tail, white feathered feet and a white star on her forehead. I named her Velvet because I loved the movie National Velvet. The little
girl who played the starring role was a very young and talented Elizabeth Taylor.

I'll never forget the day we went to bring Velvet home!  Dad had made the highest bid on her at the auction and we were taking a trailer to go and get her.  I was so excited I didn't sleep a wink and didn't want to take time to eat breakfast.  After what seemed like an eternity, we finally arrived at the ranch and I bolted for the barn to see my first love!

There she was in her stall patiently waiting for me!  She gave me a welcoming whinny and I nuzzled her soft velvety nose, put the halter on her without a hitch and led her to the trailer.  This is where the story gets a little hairy.  The minute Velvet saw that trailer her eyes opened wide and she started baking up pulling me along with her. Dad and I and a kind ranch hand must have worked over an hour trying to get her to trailer up....but she was having nothing to do with it!

I saw the look of frustration on Dad's face and knew I'd better think of something right fast!  "Dad," I pleaded, "I can ride her home!"  He looked at me as though I'd just dropped in from outer space and said, "Sharon, it's over 15 miles back home. You'd never be able to do that."

Dad followed behind Velvet and me in the truck and empty trailer as we made our way back home.  He had to stop often so he wouldn't get ahead of us.  It took the better part of the day but finally I rode up to the house proud as punch on the most beautiful horse in the world!  Tired, famished, hot, thirsty....and happier than I'd ever been in my entire life!

Your so welcome!
Excellent sweet stroy of a young girl and her horse. Just the kind of tale to lift my spirits on a very wet and miserable day and remind me of my horses. I loved them each one.

This is of course a true story! I remember it as though it were yesterday! I also remember the "smell" of Velvet. It was a good smell to me! I put my nose on her soft neck and inhaled what is to me the most wonderful smell in the world! The smell of a horse you love with all your heart. ~Sharon
