SINGING FROM MEM'RY

SINGING FROM MEM'RY

A Poem by Miss Sharon
"

Pondering from a dirge in the night.

"
SINGING FROM MEM'RY

Singing from mem'ry a dirge in the night
Holds the mind captive with no will to fight
Reading the logbooks from years in the past
Makes my soul know....there is nothing that lasts

Wanting to die and yet needing to live
Life is a mis'ry with nothing to give
Wintering feelings and cold in the heart
Make every heartbeat a breaking apart

Intoning message in flat minor key
Nothing is permanent...not even me
Shadows surrounding me, cloaking with pain
It is apparent I've nothing to gain

Singing from mem'ry a dirge in the night
Holds the mind captive with no will to fight
Reading the logbooks from years in the past
Makes my soul know....there is nothing that lasts

The repetition in the first and final stanzas works so well. Nothing lasts forever and there comes a time when many accept that their best days are in the past, and the memories of former joyful times are all they have left to cling too. The winter years for the aging can be cruel. Beautiful work dear Sharon.

No, there is nothing that lasts. Still, the fact we can remember those who have left...those we loved...makes living so much sweeter. Sharon, you are such a star with rhythm and rhyme. This poem, while the emotions are a bit dark, flowed easily and is truly lovely. Lydi***

Thank you my sweetie for your wonderful review! ~Sharon
Nothing is permanent, indeed and this echoes so loudly that notion, to live in the now is difficult sometimes, I understand that too well. This is beautifully surrendered and written with such aching wisdom...

Thank you so much Ruth for your beautiful review! ~Sharon
The theme here is impermanence, the changing nature of all material things. It can be a hard thing to accept, for our identification with our bodies is probably the most indelible of our beliefs. The speaker here looks back on times past and sees the handwriting on the wall. Still, as the Emperor/philosopher Marcus Aurelius said, death is but a natural process and therefore not to be feared.

I really enjoyed this piece of poetry. The ryhme scheme flows almost perfectly and it has an almost dark tinge to it. Wonderful poem Sharon.
