A DIFFERENT RIDE

A DIFFERENT RIDE

A Poem by Miss Sharon
"

A bit of nostalgia for the new year.

A DIFFERENT RIDE

Some things are never quite the same.
Like I remember when.
In simpler times and hop scotch days,
We'd sit there on a limb.

The air was filled with sounds of kids,
And laughter in the street...
Where we would gather there to play,
With friends we'd come to meet.

We'd clip some cards to bike spoke wheels,
To sound like motored rides,
And furry friends ran right along,
While barking by our side.

The gang would gather at my house,
To jump rope two by two.
When we got tired we'd stop to play
Monopoly and Clue.

Mom always fixed some lemonade,
It really hit the spot!
And 'fore the dark we went outside,
To that big vacant lot.

The crack of baseballs hitting bats,
Filled up the summer noon.
Then...runs and calls and slips and falls
Were heard 'till rise of moon.

Today things are much different and
It's quiet...one by one.
Computer screens light up the room,
Beneath the setting sun.

Fingers strike those plastic keys.
Camaraderie? No chance.
This world is lonely...cold and bare.
Seems minds are in a trance.

I miss the simple things like joy,
And friends here by my side.
I'd like to turn my ticket in...
And take a different ride.

Sad but true. It is indeed a different world as you say. One that is cold, harsh and lonely...
Your words echo all the missed moments of the great times.
An excellent write, Miss Sharon.

Hello, Miss Sharon! :)
This is a lovely story and lovely poetry, and so tragically true.
The children in my neighborhood don't play together. I drive past the school bus stop in the morning and the students stand apart, avoiding each other.

Exactly how I feel. Your youth seems to echo mine. I personally can see the need for cell phones as having one with you if a car breaks down helps. But what happened to face to face conversations. When did staying inside become more fun than being outside on nice days with friends. Bring back the good old days. Valentine

The days of childhood and youth will always be missed.
With the advent of computer and internet, we realize that these children have missed a lot of the fun and the good times that we had in our youth.
Very beautifully written.......as usual

You are welcome.
Great- this really brought back the Scottish version of childhood way back - not too different! I like that you have told it simply but the final bit about the present situation is a powerful message.
Good work.

What a lovely and kind review of this write! Thank you so much. ~Sharon
Wonderfully well described. The beginning so full of happiness, it made my mind travel in time with a sweet smile. And the middle sadly true...what have we done, world?
Perfect ending!

So great indeed, Sharon!

I think kids still do this. They just do it in a different way. I must admit, weather wasn't a factor when i was young. Rain, hail, or shine, you were out playing.
But they were great days.
