This day had been prearranged many years prior. It was a marriage made by choice... the choice of those other than those that were to be joined as husband and wife.
It was the custom of their faith... the ritual of their birthing place. Love had little or nothing to do with it and most times the young girl spent her wedding night silently crying herself to sleep.
The ceremony was lengthy, formal and very beautiful. Pomp and pagentry filled the air as the fragrance of thousands of flowers filled the halls while smoke from chambered incense bowls competed for their private space to bless this holy union.
Leaving the church of mutual committment the young couple smiled the obligatory smiles required of them, holing on to hands of unspoken love...a love which had been chosen. ~~
I'm not a fan of this kind of marriage, I would say it has to be for love every time, I know it's sad in this world today that so many give up on marriage too soon and divorce is high, once people made a go of things through thick and thin and found their love became stronger, Oops Sharon you got me on that soapbox again, I better go down I suppose :)
Well I'm right on that soapbox with you Richard. Thank you for a lovely and thoughtful review. ~Shar.. read moreWell I'm right on that soapbox with you Richard. Thank you for a lovely and thoughtful review. ~Sharon

Arranged marriages are still the custom in some cultures. I never have understood how they can possibly work other than the husband and wife feel an obligation to their families. You have written a good one here, my friend. Lydi**
