In a place where love cannot easily display itself, the night
Disappeared, leaving the rest for later as flowers became
Ghosts of themselves in the mist of autumn moonlight.
The image I held of myself was an idea of absence; sad and abstract.
The walls of my rented room displayed cracking mosaic murals on
Dingy yellowed wallpaper in patchworks of ancient art.
There was a musty smell of tired memories and cigarettes
Floating on the air bearing scent and taste of unwelcome change.
Alone, as I often was, I recoiled at the thought of our last good-bye.
We had nothing which seemed right to whisper to one another
And nothing in common with which to begin a conversation.
It was a time when desire became an intrusion the body refused to believe.
A sense of discomfort began to include me without acknowledgement as I
Sought refuge upon virgin pages, filling them with memory of happier times.
Words became their own reward as the curtain once again came down
In silence on the final, unfortunate lines of my solitary one-act play.

"I sought refuge upon virgin pages" Ah, yes, we have all done this at some point. Memories are wonderful inspiration for poetry. A little darker than your norm, but a wonderful read, Sharon. Hope you are enjoying the weekend. Lydi**

Wow. A much darker and forlorn style than I expect from you ... and a quite enjoyable write to boot. Well done. ~Jim
