Greenwood and MeandersA Poem by OneAmongstManyGreenwood and Meanders Ah! mid-August and the sunshine Where the rain plays interlude And kindled spirits flame by starry sky. The greenwood pathway is our Venice A setting rich for thoughtful wonder The ageing summer sliding idly by. Down along the creeping river’s course A hazy clearing bends into view Here is where we triumph, here is where we lie To watch the sunny after-morning Landings of early falling leaves The thoughtful moments slowly drifting by. There we lean once more into each other Quote the joys of times remembered For they may fade to nothings by and by ‘Til cloudless sky is rent by cloudful cover And drops splash fast upon the river The sorry pain of endings in your eye. “‘Tis the rain, and look at us You in skirt and I in shorts Out in August like it was July. Let’s away for cover now, my angel Ere the rain makes driftwood of us See the river rising all the time!” Fire roaring in the homestead hearth now We watch the rain cascading from the sky. The river has poured out unto the rushes The greenwood stormed by nature’s fury ‘Til brightening horizons tell brighter times are nigh. Smelling sweetly sumptuous is the fallen rain As we step out into the gathered evening Lo, the glistening leaves of oaks and pines Ain’t the forest wondrous! Ain’t it all sublime! Hand in hand we now resume our voyage The water in the ditch slides ever slower The mud and bank-burst river slide slower by than time. © 2019 OneAmongstMany |
