The Coldest WinterA Poem by OneAmongstManyThe Coldest Winter Face to face with the coldest winter My feet were always frozen anyway Standing still, afraid to move In case my heart would betray me. And now these nights are dark and long I’ll watch the pale frost form silently Upon the black, wiry limbs of trees And deeper still inside of me. In my unseeing mind she’s warm and safe As the fire burns wild in her eyes. We saw no autumn this time round Warmth and glow then suddenly ice Did I take in all around me Or did I let each perfect moment slip by? Lying side by side and absent conversation Good times pass by ‘fore they’re realized The wind blowing by, the sky a deep blue I centered my gaze on a distant kite. She’s braving the cold, cheeks reddened and rosy And her breath on the glass is a breath of life. Goodbye, goodbye To those sweet hazy evenings And chuckles and shorts and summertime We lived it, breathed it, but then it slipped by. Now here comes the coldest winter Freezing hearts and minds with passing nights Replacing warm breezes with an icy mist While the skeletal trees stand still and shy. She’s laughing softly with a nameless companion And he’ll say winter is his favourite time. © 2017 OneAmongstManyAuthor's Note
