Guiding Light

Guiding Light

A Poem by Kristen R. Heyl
"

There are those people who inspire you at the right moment, right before you are about to go over the cliff and don't they deserve something?

"

A friend,

a colleague,

a surrogate mother,

you’ve been all

three to me.

You’ve lent a listening ear,

a shoulder to lean on,

and words of advice

from your trunk of wisdom.

You’ve made me rethink life

and my perspective on things that happen

in order to overcome those obstacles

that appear in front of me

when I was cruising along

at a nice clip.

You’ve shown me that

Strength is something I possess

and to recognize that

even when my view becomes

distorted through the deluge of tears.

You’ve been an example

of a strong and successful

woman on her own

that isn’t afraid to admit

to moments of regret

and wishes of a different path in life

all the while accepting the one

you have been given.

Thanks for helping me

to regain my perspective

at a time in my life

where I wasn’t sure

which way was up

or if I was going to make it.

Now I am strong and determined again

to continue on my way

and not let anyone

ever make me doubt myself again.
