The Power of PoetryA Poem by OmilyDon’t you hate it when Someone writes a vague, cryptic poem Expecting you to waste time “Reading between the lines?” Isn’t it narcissistic of poets To hand you a metaphor Wrapped in a simile That’s actually a profound paradox And expect, when you uncover its layer upon layer meaning, To be worshipped as a literary genius? I won’t put you through that. I bet, if you got the meaning straight up, Clearly staring at you from the page, You would easily appreciate poetry. So, this is my poem. It’s about hating pretentious, “symbolic” poetry And my personal mission to be upfront and blunt with you So you aren’t forced to decipher A brain-frying jumble of words. And here is the end: How ironic. © 2010 OmilyFeatured Review
