The Eyes

The Eyes

A Chapter by Omikron

Do you ever think about wonders
Do they make you sit and wonder
How precious a sunset can be
How a touch can feel like thunder

How on an early September morning
The eyes can glisten so bright
I have not before recognized
Such quiet and resting might

Though I have gone through heaven and hell
Seen most of what can be seen
I have never quite looked at myself
Never known how beautiful I've been

Through my life I have searched for the impossible
For the calm inside the storm
Never before did I realize
The answer was with me since the day I was born

Then one day, as the light fell on my face
On an early September morning
I was stunned by the sight in the mirror
It almost seemed foreign

Something was different, something was new
In my eyes there was no pain
I saw only a shine that once was lost
Like the sea shines after the rain

The sight put a smile on my face
Hysterically I laughed and laughed
Why would I ever question and tarnish
Nature's own perfect craft

It is said that the eyes are windows to the soul
Though I never understood what that meant
Until that one early September morning
Until that strange event

As our bodies change and grow old
The eyes stay pretty much the same
They store every sunset, every sky
Every love and every shame

We may smile when we are hurting
We may laugh when the soul wants to cry
But the eyes we cannot manipulate
We cannot force them to stay dry

It is said that the eyes are windows to the soul
This much I know is true
When the soul is pretty, the eyes are pretty
When the soul is sad, the eyes are too
