“Why do you interfere?  The council will have your wings clipped.”

“And you don’t think your council will clip yours first?”

He watched the two, terrified and bleeding from several cuts on his arms and one across his cheek.  The one protecting him was a young woman  in her late twenties, dressed in an ensemble of black leather and soft cloth, holding a sword that was made of two blade twisted together.  The one before her was a man in his early thirties, holding twin katanas that were half the length of his body, dressed in a black leather coat and long matching pants.  What made these two different than the humans sleeping soundly in their homes far from them was the white wings upon the young woman’s backside, dark black leather wings on the man’s back.  One possessed the gift of heaven, the other the gift of hell.  Granted the ability to live among the mortals.  Powers limited by their respective councils.

“He challenged me first,” the man informed lazily, flicking the blood off his blades, “As stated by the rules, no one is allowed to interfere and the duel is over when one admits defeat.”

“That only follows for those blessed to adulthood,” the woman corrected, “For one of your…talents…to accept his challenge… Hell will be laughing at your foolishness.”

“That does not answer my question.  Why did you save him?”

“He is my cousin.  I am the only family he has left.  I’ll be damned to the Ninth Level of Hell before I let anyone kill him.”

“Your cousin,” the man peered over her shoulder to see her charge shake a bit in fright,  “Then why does he not have wings?”

“Do you know nothing of Angels?  Only the girls are born with wings.  The males grow them upon their teenagehood.  As you can see, he’s still a child.”

The man could not argue with that logic.  The one behind her was indeed a young boy that could not be older than ten, eyes full of innocence and a purity that has yet to be snatched by a lover or a thief.  He had thought the child nothing more than a human with the gift of sight, to see through his illusion of being a mere human.  He never had thought to meet a child Angel upon Earth, believing that they remained in Heaven for safety and protection.

“You were foolish to bring him here on Earth.  The humans will sense his purity, and the damned will come to claim it for themselves, making him a Fallen.”

“You underestimate humans.  The strong-hearted ones will protect him.  Have protected him.  The weak-hearted have no chance, and neither do you.  Now leave, before my blade drinks in your hell blood.”

“Hm.  It is below me to attack a female when not in a proper duel.  I will be back when he’s an adult to finish what we started.”

With that, he sheathes his katanas and turned away from them, disappearing in a mist of black smoke and feathers as he walked away.  Unable to feel his aura anymore, the female Angel turned to the young boy and knelt before him.

“Why did you challenge him?  You could’ve gotten yourself killed, and you’re not protected yet by Hell’s poisons.”

“I wanted to protect you,” the child confessed in a near wail, hugging his cousin, “Everyone’s been protecting me all of my life.  When will it be my turn to protect them?”

“Soon, cousin.  We, who are blessed with mortal and immortal blood, have to follow the rules and await the time when we are called upon for our duty.  Besides, the bonds you make with the humans will help the cause in the future.”

“You mean…”

“It is an inevitable event, one that brings change to a world that is becoming stagnant with one race ruling it.  Only the highly adaptable can survive.  That’s why the boys grow wings later on.  They can live with the humans and find the strong-hearted ones, ones that can accept change and have the will to live on after their world has died.”

“What about the weak-hearted ones?  Will they be the demons’ victims?”

“I cannot say what will happen to them.  It is the Divine’s will that will determine what will happen to all.  All we can do is save as many as we can.  Lucifer has claimed too many souls and Hell swells with the damned’s mass.  None know if and when he will start his war again with Heaven, but we must be ready.

“Now,” she waves a hand and the young boy’s wounds have healed almost instantly, “return to your friends.  They are worried, and no more challenging demons.”

“Okay,” the young boy smiled brightly, then stood and left for the home of his friends, whom he was living with.

“I will always protect you,” the woman smiled gently, “You were chosen, along with many, to help the humans, for you yourself have the blood of a human and an Angel.  More than that, a heart and soul of a pure star.

“Such are the gifts of Heaven that must be protected.  Your friends will keep you safe, and you will return the favor one day.  Just wait and see.”

Something I wrote on a whim. Has nothing to do with my opinion about the end of the world or heaven and hell.

Truly a nicely written piece.

The storyline has a somewhat Familiar quality to it, so I appreciated the creative details you added to make this story one-of a kind. for ex. the 'fact' that girls are born with wings and boys grow theirs in their teenage yrs. And the reason for it had to do with males fitting in with mankind for some time in order to seek out the strong-hearted individuals.... Nice reasoning. :) Overall, this is an enjoyable read and I hope to read more one day. Definitely has great potential, Nice job

Very enjoyable. I think it would have been more fun as a chapter story though, so the next time you need something to write, think about it ; )
